What is SEO Now? Top Google Search Trends for Organic Success

“WTF is SEO?!” is a question I often hear as an SEO content consultant when put in the awkward position to explain what I do to make money online.

To answer the “What is SEO?” query without getting too heady, I’ve come up with a quick and overly simplified reply:

SEO stands for search engine optimization, which is creating content for websites and getting it to appear high up in Google search results, or optimizing existing site content so that its search rankings improve.

If you want a more dictionary-style SEO definition, search engine optimization is the act, process, and discipline of creating, structuring, and promoting digital content so that it ranks high on Google and other search engines organically, which means without having to shell out mad loot for paid ads.

As you can guess, this SEO definition still leaves lots of people confused, full of follow-up questions, and still wondering just how the hell I actually do what I do as an SEO expert.

Because as you already know, SEO is anything but simple as a marketing method when put into practice, since SEO can be broken down into a variety of underlying disciplines that each take time to learn and master. Not to mention all the other SEO acronyms you’ll encounter that are just part of the Google game (and the Bing Fling; it’s the second-largest search engine, after all).

That’s why in this post, I’m going to sort everything out for you when it comes to what SEO is today, along with the current Google search trends for 2024, so that you know exactly what the future of SEO looks like this year and beyond, and you can strategically approach SEO for growing your business’s online presence.

So, WTF is SEO about as we approach 2024?

What is SEO?

Within the “simple” SEO definition above lies a more intricate explanation of the various processes that go into what a true SEO strategy expert does.

Complicated concepts like keyword research, on-page optimization, technical SEO, and obtaining backlinks each require their own set of skills, and you can wind up becoming an expert at just one of them and still earn an above-average living.

And that’s just the beginning.

SEO in 2024 is expected to involve lots of artificial intelligence, specifically AI content writing tools, including some powerful ones that I’ve already personally tested (and highly recommend) that help you write content 10x faster.

(I’m talking about Jasper® AI (try it for free now) and ChatGPT with GPT 4, which you should definitely take the time to check out.)

Thanks to AI writing tools, people who used to have difficulty creating content will now have the chance to crank out copious amounts sans stress.

But, while SEO has a lot of moving parts and can sound — and be — fairly complex, the beauty of SEO is that anyone can learn how to do it, and you can become an SEO practitioner in a short period of time.

If you read my story, then you know that I started off as a personal chef before “accidentally” becoming a food journalist, learning on the job how to be a copywriter, and teaching myself SEO by reading about it online and putting it into practice for my life partner’s destination wedding photography company (and getting some sweet results, to boot).

So, if I could somehow switch careers from the kitchen to the computer + the couch (or an awesome sit-stand desk) through the magic of self-teaching and taking initiative, then it’s surely possible for you to copy my steelo (and it’s totally cool if you do — in fact, I highly recommend it).

That was way back in 2015 when I started my SEO journey, and in the ever-changing world of Google organic search, 2024 certainly promises to be an exciting year for anyone seeking the holy grail of getting placement in the top position on Page 1 of the Google SERPs (a.k.a. the Search Engine Results Pages for any SEO n00bs up in herre) for all of your company’s coveted keywords.

Next, we’ll talk SEO in 2024 before discussing the top Google organic search trends that will affect everyone from small businesses to large enterprises, bloggers, and anyone else who runs a website in 2024.

What is SEO in 2024? E-E-A-T + YMYL

What is SEO? Your Money, Your Life: Hands holding hundred dollar bills

As technology continues to evolve, so too does Google’s algorithm and its approach to organic search ranking.

The past several years have seen the rise of the E-A-T and YMYL concepts from Google, and now the search engine giant has tacked on an extra E to the first acronym, making it E-E-A-T, which stands for:

  • Expertise
  • Experience
  • Authoritativeness
  • Trustworthiness

In a nutshell, E-E-A-T means that if content is going to rank high on Google, then it must establish authority and trust through expert-level information and relevant experience, not just cookie-cutter, copy-and-paste blog posts that offer nothing more than what everyone else is spouting off.

YMYL stands for “Your Money, Your Life,” which refers to content that could potentially affect a person’s financial well-being or their actual life, including content that could harm specific groups of people, public institutions, public interest issues, or society at large.

With so much potentially harmful content out there, Google owns some of the biggest responsibility on the planet to keep what they showcase on their SERPs, Google Discover, and featured snippets safe, trustworthy, and helpful based on their users’ search intent, and they don’t take it lightly.

(For more information about E-E-A-T, YMYL, and a bounty of other in-depth details on how Google rates and ranks content, check out Google’s search quality evaluator guidelines.)

Coming up with original content sounds easy in theory, but the reality is that not all companies, writers, and creators can pull it off.

And with AI writing tools like the aforementioned Jasper® AI and ChatGPT leveling the playing field for those who have trouble writing long-form blog posts (or writing anything at all), SEO competition for top positions and featured snippets is only going to get fiercer in 2024 and beyond.

The 5 Pillars of Search Engine Optimization in 2024

The five pillars of SEO

Back in the early years of SEO, sites could rank organically by doing shady stuff known as “black hat” techniques, including keyword stuffing and using color tricks to hide them in a site’s footer.

But these days, those trash SEO techniques don’t fly, as the Googs has gotten way too smart for that.

Nowadays, the core SEO principles success have shifted to legit, “white-hat” SEO pillars, namely:

Each of these SEO elements is vitally important and requires patience, know-how, and strategic tools to do them right, and larger businesses have the luxury of hiring multiple SEO professionals to specialize in each of the above practices.

That’s why it’s especially important for marketers, bloggers, entrepreneurs, and website owners who run small businesses to consistently update their understanding of what SEO is by learning the ins and outs of these best practices.

That way, you can craft solid SEO strategies to keep up with the latest Google organic search trends and stay ahead of bigger competition.

Thankfully, there is a multitude of SEO software tools that can help you get the information you need to construct the right SEO strategy for your business or website, and the best SEO tools make doing all these complex-sounding tasks a breeze once you learn how to use them.

Now, let’s look into each of these SEO pillars and the best SEO software for performing the tasks associated with them to give you an idea of what each entails in your SEO strategy in 2024 and beyond.

SEO Pillar #1: Keyword Research

Person doing keyword research for SEO

Keyword research is an essential part of any SEO strategy as we approach 2024. Knowing how to conduct effective keyword research can give you a major boost in terms of increased website traffic, rankings, and, ultimately, sales. But for those who are just starting out with SEO, it can be a daunting task.

That’s why we’re going to break down the basics of keyword research so you can overcome the learning curve and eventually do it yourself,

First off, let’s cover the basics: What exactly are keywords, anyway?

Keywords are phrases or words that people type into search engines when looking for something specific – like “keyword research” or “2024 SEO trends” in this case.

By identifying the right keywords and using them strategically in your website and blog content, you can increase your chances of ranking higher on search engine results pages (SERPs).

Now that you know what they are, let’s dive into the best way to conduct keyword research:

How to effectively perform keyword research

1) Start by making a list of potential keywords related to your niche or topic.

Make sure to think like your potential customer or client and include industry buzzwords that they would use. Try not to limit yourself to a set number of keyword ideas and work until you exhaust all your ideas.

2) Utilize free online tools such as Google Trends, Neil Patel’s Answer The Public, and others to find more keyword ideas.

These three tools can help you with keyword ideas in your initial planning phase. Simply type in your niche to generate a long list of related keywords that you can add to your list of targeted keywords.

There is also an assortment of premium keyword research tools that can help you discover the best target keywords within your industry and niche, and I personally love the Keyword Research Toolkit from Semrush.

Semrush offers everything you could ever dream of in an SEO tool, making it the best SEO software investment you can ever make for your growing business at any phase.

This all-in-one SEO platform provides everything from keyword research and creativity tools to rank tracking, competitive research, backlink tools, and so much more. Semrush even makes tools in other business software niches unnecessary by performing social media management, content marketing analytics, and much more.

I also recommend KWFinder, one of five powerful SEO tools you’ll get when you subscribe to Mangools SEO suite, one of the most affordable SEO platforms for beginners to expert-level users.

Like Semrush, KWFinder and other Mangools tools can also give you insights into the search volume and competition level for each of your keywords so you know whether it makes sense to target certain keywords and scrap others.

When crafting a content strategy for a website and/or blog, you’ll want to target keywords with high-ranking potential but also a low competition level so that it doesn’t become an uphill battle trying to rank for them, and these SEO keyword research tools are the only way to find out this information quickly and easily.

3) Finally, select the key phrases which have high search volume but also a reasonably low difficulty level for attaining higher search rankings.

Targeting keywords with high search volume and low competition will help you climb up SERPs quickly and increase organic traffic to your website from the moment you start.

Still, it takes a lot of time and SEO efforts to find the best keywords for small businesses in each industry, so don’t expect to get your keyword research done in an hour. It may take a few days to get a solid keyword list compiled for you to start targeting, so don’t pressure yourself to finish fast.

If you follow these simple steps, you will be able to conduct effective keyword research even if you don’t have advanced SEO knowledge – all it takes is knowing about the best SEO tools available out there, learning to get what you need from them, and refining your results according to your own business needs.

SEO Pillar  #2: Search Intent

Person searching on Google on a laptop

Search intent has become an increasingly important ranking factor in SEO and content strategy over the past few years. When it comes to ranking for a particular search term, user intent is one of the key components that can help you determine if your content is relevant enough to rank.

But what exactly is search intent and how can you use it to create a solid SEO strategy?

In simple terms, search intent refers to the reasons why someone enters a particular query into a search engine.

For instance, when someone searches “best laptop for remote work,” their intent is transactional by nature since the searcher’s goal is to purchase a laptop based on ideas and recommendations from trusted experts with experience using laptops for working remotely.

And when someone searches for “how to work from home,” their intent is informational since they’re in search of work-from-home job ideas and WFH tips – and not looking for something to buy.

To ensure that your content meets user experience expectations, it’s important to research relevant keywords and understand their underlying meaning.

Simply search for yourself on Google or your preferred search engine to see what comes up for any query in question, and what you see in the top search results will inform you on what its algorithm determines is the best content for that keyword or keyphrase.

To further refine your keyword research and maximize your chances of ranking high, use advanced tools like SERanking, SEMrush, and Ahrefs, which offer data-rich insights about current keyword trends and competition levels to help ensure you’re targeting the right keywords with the highest potential for organic growth.

SEO Pillar #3: On-Page Optimization

What is SEO? On-Page Optimization

Content remains king when it comes to boosting website rankings. And in 2024, optimizing your content strategy for search engines will be even trickier than before because the Google algorithm will be much better at understanding user intent behind queries.

This means that creating content that answers questions with clarity and accuracy is more important than ever for ranking well for certain keywords and getting those coveted featured snippets.

On top of focusing on creating the best content according to E-E-A-T and YMYL guidelines, the same old on-page optimization best practices will still apply when configuring your content, namely:

  • Headings: use a clear hierarchy with one H1, supporting H2 headings, and H3/H4/H5 subheadings if necessary
  • URLs: structure URL slugs to contain primary keywords and keep them clean and short
  • Keyword Density: use your primary target keyword in your content between 0.5% and 2% of your total word count (for example, using your primary keyword between 5 and 20 times within a 1,000-word post)
  • Images: name images using your primary keyword, use alt text to explain concisely what each image is, and size images accordingly so that they won’t negatively affect page-load speed for ideal image optimization

The RankMath SEO plugin for WordPress has free and premium versions, each of which can help you understand your web pages and articles from an SEO perspective with a detailed checklist that you can follow along with to easily optimize everything.

Additionally, incorporating structured data, or Schema markup, into web pages can help further refine relevancy signals between content displayed on a page and user search queries.

If you don’t know how to add Schema markup and you use WordPress, RankMath can do it for you automatically, along with a number of other valuable SEO benefits when constructing your pages and blog posts. (More on schema markup later.)

The WordPress SEO plugin you choose may ultimately come down to your user experience since they’re both extremely powerful even in the free versions.

SEO Pillar #4: Technical SEO

Person doing technical SEO

As always, ensuring the technical side of SEO is running smoothly will be a theme in 2024, with familiar practices like page speed optimization, 301 redirects, and ensuring pages are properly indexed being top priority.

That’s because a site can’t gain clout in search rankings if it doesn’t load fast, and many site owners don’t realize that images, plugins, and code scripts can cause sites to lag, with Google penalizing them with poor SEO rankings as a result.

With Google ramping up with new advancements such as Google’s Core Web Vitals (CWV), SEOs have even more concerns to wrangle with, but at least there’s guidance.

The Core Web Vitals are the following:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) – measures loading performance
  • First Input Delay (FID) – measures interactivity
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) – measures visual stability

These metrics measure key aspects of a web page that help Google evaluate whether or not it provides a good page experience for users through technical optimizations.

On top of using the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console, you can discover how well your site performs in terms of page speed with tools like Google Page Speed Insights and Pingdom’s Web Speed Test and learn where you need to make improvements.

SEO Pillar #5: Building Backlinks

What is SEO?: Backlinks

Building quality backlinks from high authority sources remains one of the most difficult pieces of any successful SEO campaign — and in 2024 it’s only going to grow in importance.

That’s because more people are learning that links matter more than ever today, and outreach to try and get them from other websites has gotten more competitive.

The way you gain backlinks is often by making a simple ask through cold email, but it’s not always easy to find the right person to message at the company or website you’d like to be linked from.

You might also trade backlinks with other site owners and bloggers in similar niches, at least when it makes sense.

Plus, you can reach out to relevant sites, blogs, and publications and offer to write guest posts, and within your articles, you can add a link or two back to your site (with permission, of course — make sure to find out if it’s okay to backlink to your own site in your guest blog post and/or author bio before agreeing to contribute somewhere).

Plus, you can attempt to get backlinks by helping other journalists by signing up to HARO (Help a Reporter Out) as a Source and then responding to any queries that you can provide an expert answer to. This has personally helped me get backlinks from sites with high domain authority, a great win for any blogger, even if they’re nofollow links.

Note that it’s crucial to get backlinks that are seen as natural endorsements from relevant sites instead of unnatural link placements which could potentially get flagged by Google’s algorithm.

Additionally, local citations have grown in importance when it comes to claiming local business positions within SERPs due to their ability to plug in useful information like address details & store hours quickly, so expect this trend not to slow down anytime soon either.

There are also companies that sell backlinks, but many are of questionable reputation, so it pays to be extra careful when it comes to buying links. Google can tell when backlinks are sketchy, and your site could even get a penalty in the search rankings if you deal in shady link exchanges.

Google search trends in 2024 for SEO success

Google homepage on a laptop on a desk - Google search trends

Once you understand the core SEO fundamentals, it’s time to move ahead to learning about the current SEO trends on Google, the world’s leading search engine.

That’s because Google’s algorithm is constantly evolving, and I want you to be able to keep winning at search in 2024 and beyond.

So, let’s talk about the top Google organic search trends you can expect to affect SEO in 2024.

2024 Google Organic Search Trend #1. Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence

Person playing chess against an AI robot that user machine learning

The combination of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) will continue to play a major role in Google’s organic search algorithm in 2024, and it should definitely be part of your content strategy. It’s also going to completely change the game for Bing, or should I say New Bing, which is powered by GPT-4.

AI enables machines to learn from data and make decisions without any human intervention, while machine learning applies mathematical algorithms that use AI technologies such as deep learning and natural language processing (NLP). These technologies are already revolutionizing a wide range of industries, including SEO.

I recently wrote a long-form article for Skyword’s Content Standard on generative AI’s implications on search, which you should definitely bookmark for later and read when you have time.

In it, I discuss how machine learning and AI will continue to be a top organic search trend, as search engines like Google and Bing are implementing AI chatbot technology to improve the quality and relevance of their search results, and content creators are using AI writing tools to write blog posts faster and easier than ever before.

For example, Google’s RankBrain is a machine learning system that is used to help process and understand search queries, and it has been a key part of Google’s search algorithm since 2015, and savvy creators are leveraging AI content tools like Jasper® AI (try it free now) and ChatGPT to build content libraries five times faster.

Here’s how to optimize your site for machine learning and AI:

  1. Use structured data: This can help search engines understand a page’s content and make it more likely to be included in search results or featured snippets (RankMath’s schema markup tool for WordPress can help).
  2. Use natural language in page titles and headings to make it sound less robotic.
  3. Use semantically related keywords: This can also help search engines understand a page and boost its chances of inclusion in search results.
  4. Optimize page loading times: This can improve the user experience and increase a page’s likelihood of being included in search results or featured snippets.

By following these best practices, website owners can help ensure that their sites are well-positioned to take advantage of machine learning and AI in 2024 and beyond.

2024 Google Organic Search Trend #2. Mobile-First Indexing

Person performing a mobile search on Google

Today, more people are using their smartphones to access the internet than desktop or laptop computers, and Google wants to ensure that it is providing the best possible results for users searching on mobile devices.

That’s why mobile-first indexing is becoming the new standard indexing process that Google uses, where they index and rank websites for search results primarily based on the mobile version of a website’s content rather than the desktop version.

In 2024, mobile-first indexing will continue to be a top organic search trend, as the use of mobile devices to access the internet is only going to increase. This means that it will be more important than ever for website owners to ensure that they’re creating mobile-friendly versions of their websites that are optimized for search engines.

How to prepare for mobile-first indexing

Get your site ready for mobile optimization by following these best practices:

  1. Ensure that the mobile version of your site is just as comprehensive as the desktop version as you build and design your site.
  2. Use a theme with responsive design like the Kadence theme for WordPress to ensure that the site looks good and functions well on traditional and mobile devices.
  3. Perform a test with Google Mobile-Friendly tool to check that the site is mobile-friendly for phone searches.
  4. Use Google PageSpeed Insights to monitor your site’s performance for webpage loading times and speed issues.
  5. Use Google’s Search Console to monitor the site’s performance on mobile devices and to identify any issues that may need to be addressed for your website pages in mobile searches.

By doing all of the above, website owners can ensure that their sites look awesome on mobile devices and are well-positioned to take advantage of mobile-first indexing in 2024 and beyond.

2024 Google Organic Search Trend #3. Voice Search Optimization

Voice search is a technology that allows users to search the internet and access information by speaking into a device, rather than typing their queries into a search box, and voice search optimization focuses on optimizing a web page for queries made using these voice commands rather than text-based searches.

Using natural language processing (NLP) techniques, SEO professionals can optimize a website’s content so that it responds better to voice queries from potential customers who are using voice search through virtual assistants such as Apple’s Siri, Google Assistant, or Amazon Alexa.

With the increasing use of smart speakers and the integration of voice assistants into smartphones and other devices, it is likely that the number of people who use voice search daily will continue to grow and be a top organic search trend in 2024, and it should therefore be baked into your content strategy.

Semrush voice search success story

How to prepare for voice search optimization

Optimizing a website for voice search involves making it more visible and more easily understood by voice assistants. This can be done by:

  1. Using long-tail keywords: These are more conversational and specific phrases that are more likely to be used in spoken queries.
  2. Using structured data: This helps search engines understand page content and can make it more likely to be included in voice searches.
  3. Creating content that answers common questions: Voice searches often take the form of questions, so having pages on a website that provide clear, concise answers to common questions can make it more likely to be included in voice search results.
  4. Optimizing page loading times: Voice assistants often prioritize faster-loading pages when returning search results.

By following these best practices and using a powerful SEO tool like Semrush, website owners can improve the visibility and usability of their sites for voice search in 2024 and beyond.

2024 Google Organic Search Trend #4. Page Speed Optimization

Google search trends - have a fast loading website

We’ve already discussed page speed optimization, but it deserves its own section because of its utmost importance in SEO today.

Page speed optimization is the process of reducing page load times by optimizing code structure and ensuring images are compressed properly before being uploaded onto a website server or hosting service provider.

This helps maximize user engagement and increase conversions since people tend not to stick around if they have to wait too long for a page or image to load completely because of poor page speed performance. According to Google, “The probability of bounce increases 32% as page load time goes from 1 second to 3 seconds.”

In 2024, page speed optimization will continue to be a top organic search trend, as search engines like Google place a high value on the user experience and are likely to continue to prioritize faster-loading pages in their organic search results.

Here’s how to improve site loading times with page speed optimization:

  1. Optimize images: Large or uncompressed images can slow down page loading times. Using tools like ShortPixel can help with optimizing images by reducing file sizes without sacrificing quality.
  2. Use a content delivery network (CDN): A CDN can help reduce the distance that data has to travel, which can improve loading times.
  3. Minimize the use of redirects: Redirects can slow down page loading times, so it is best to use them sparingly. Still, using redirects is an essential part of SEO if you ever decide to change your site’s URL structure or individual post or page URLs, and RankMath can help you manage them with its premium WordPress SEO plugin, or you can easily manage them with Bluehost when they’re your hosting provider.
  4. Enable browser caching: This allows a browser to store certain resources locally, which can help reduce loading times for repeat visitors. I recommend using WP Rocket ($59/year) if you use WordPress to make the browser caching process as seamless as possible and perform a variety of other important SEO tasks, to boot.

2024 Google Organic Search Trend #5. Structured Data (Schema) Markup

Person search on Google on a laptop

Structured data markup is a way to annotate website content by adding HTML tags that define the type of information contained within text-based content so that it can be more easily understood by both humans and machines like Googlebot crawlers which extract information from websites before displaying them in organic search results.

This can include information about the page’s content, such as the type of content (such as article, event, recipe, or video content), the author, and the publish date.

Upon crawling and reading these tags, bots can then quickly understand how content should be organized within SERPs and display them accordingly according to relevance with respect to specific keywords being searched for by users.

Schema.org is one example of a collaborative, community-driven effort to create a standardized set of structured data markups, or schemas, for use on the internet. The goal of schema.org is to make it easier for search engines and other applications to understand the content of a webpage and provide more relevant and useful search results.

Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo! are among the companies that support schema.org, and many websites use schema.org markup to annotate their content. In 2024, it is likely that the use of schema.org will continue to be a top organic search trend, as search engines are using structured data to understand the content of a page and provide more relevant and useful search results.

Here’s how to optimize your site for structured data markup:

  1. Use a supported structured data format: Google supports several structured data formats, including JSON-LD, Microdata, and RDFa.
  2. Use Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper: This tool can help website owners add structured data markup to their pages.
  3. Test and validate structured data: Google provides a Schema Markup Testing Tool that website owners can use to test and validate their structured data markup.

By following these best practices, website owners can help ensure that their sites are well-positioned to take advantage of structured data markup in 2024 and beyond.

2024 Google Organic Search Trend #6. Local SEO Strategies

Person walking outside on city street searching on mobile

Local SEO refers to the process of optimizing a website to be more visible in search results for local queries.

This can include optimizing the website for the most relevant keywords and phrases to the business’s location, as well as ensuring that the website has accurate and complete business information on Google My Business and other search engine business profile directories (e.g., name, address, phone number, business hours).

In 2024, it is likely that local search factors will continue to be a top organic search trend, as more and more people are using their smartphones to search for local businesses and services on the go.

  2. Use location-specific keywords: This can help a business’s website rank higher in search results for local queries.
  3. Get listed in online directories: Sites like Yelp can help improve a business’s visibility in local search results.
  4. Encourage customer reviews: Positive reviews can improve a business’s visibility in local search results, so don’t be afraid to ask for a 5-star review from your happiest customers.
